A group of eager adult students joined Jane Hutton, The Functional Foodie, at Truro School Cookery for her one-day The Good Gut Guide course.
Throughout the day, participants explored the fascinating world of gut health, gaining a deeper understanding of digestion and the significant differences between symptoms and their root causes. Jane discussed whether gluten is friend or foe, explained where and how digestive health can go awry, and shared practical advice on common gut issues and how to address them. The course also covered how to distinguish between a symptom and the underlying problem, as well as the role of food allergies, intolerances, probiotics, enzymes, and nutrient absorption. Participants learned about the impact of hormones, pesticides, microbes, parasites, food choices, sugar, bacterial imbalances, and stress on gut health, before discovering natural ways to calm the gut, improve digestion, and support overall wellbeing.
The hands-on cookery session saw the group prepare a delicious selection of gut-friendly dishes, including Seared Romaine with Meatballs and Middle Eastern Sauce, Berry Syllabub with a Crunchy Cocoa Topping, and Apple Cake with Almonds. They also made a couple of simple, nutritious snacks designed to nourish the microbiome throughout the day.
This educational and practical course provided participants with the knowledge, confidence, and skills needed to create more gut-friendly meals in their own kitchens.
Jane will be returning to Truro School Cookery later this year for more inspiring courses. Adults can join her on 24 October and 4 December for The Hunter’s Feast, while younger cooks can take part in the Leaving Home, Learn to Cook Camp for Teens on 28 July, or the Skills for Life Cookery Camp for Children and Teens on 18, 19, 25 and 26 August.
