It was an immensely busy summer at Truro School, with our Activity Camps welcoming more than 1,000 children for a packed programme of sporting, artistic, cookery and outdoor activities.
In the kitchens, creativity was in full swing as mixing, kneading and sizzling filled the room with laughter and the delicious smell of freshly prepared food.
Over four enjoyable days, enthusiastic young chefs joined nutrition specialist and chef Jane Hutton for a varied programme of cookery classes. The sessions covered baking, healthy snacks, family meals and nutritious breakfasts, giving children the opportunity to develop practical cooking skills while creating delicious food to take home and share with their families.
The morning sessions were designed for younger participants, while the afternoons were reserved for teenagers. Both groups prepared the same recipes, with the older students developing their skills further by weighing and measuring their own ingredients, working more independently and learning about the nutritional science behind the food they prepared.
Across the four days, the children made everything from sponge cakes, muffins and pizza dough to healthy snacks, family meals and nutritious breakfasts. They learned valuable skills including weighing and measuring, safe food preparation, mixing and cooking techniques, as well as exploring healthier ingredient choices and the nutritional benefits of different foods.
Jane Hutton is an award-winning nutrition specialist, chef and educator who is passionate about making healthy, nutritious cooking accessible and enjoyable. Through her practical approach, she helped the children understand how the food they prepared could support their health and wellbeing.
The four days were filled with creativity, practical learning and plenty of delicious food. The young chefs left with new skills, greater confidence in the kitchen and lots of inspiration to continue cooking at home.
